"恐懼"可以帶來和平.這句話看來是有問題的,上本書的作者認為以色列在加薩就試圖這麼做.不過,即使有看似和平狀態,那也是暫時的表面假象,裏頭的真相可以臭不可聞,或是非常殘忍令人恐懼,讓人卑膝屈辱的活著.小說"屈辱"寫的就是這樣狀態下的南非故事,它成於1999年,但它所描繪的情景根本就是今天南非的真實寫照,因此不得不佩服作者Coetzee的洞察預見力,他未侷限民粹推波描繪的假平和,直指包藏人心醜惡的真價值才是真的人文精神.
